Educators strive to embed Indigenous perspectives in meaningful ways throughout our curriculum on a regular basis. This week we also made a conscious effort to showcase a range of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Artists, Authors and Illustrators as part of our discussions around NAIDOC Week.

The following is a snapshot of learning that has taken place this week. 📸

During our YOGA Session we listened to and danced along to the song, “Join my party” performed and sung by the talented Indigenous musical artist, Christine Anu. As we danced, we also reflected on some of the words, such as “deadly” and “styling up” and their meanings.

During Story time we explored Indigenous author and illustrator, Bronwyn Bancroft’s Shapes of Australia! Afterwards inspired by Bancroft’s vivid illustrations of Australian landscapes made from shapes, children had the opportunity to create their own images by collaging with shapes cut from recycled paper!

In the Studio Room, provocations were provided to inspire the children as they created. The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island Flags were displayed at the easel, with paints to match the colours of each flag. And we revisited yesterday’s collaging experience, inspired by Bancroft’s illustrations.

During Story time we engaged with the story, “Too many cheeky dogs” created by Johanna Bell and Indigenous storyteller/ illustrator Dion Beasley. We explored life in a rural setting through the lens of some cheeky dogs. Some of the children also created their own cheeky dogs using drawing as an art medium.

Continuing on from Tuesdays provocations of Bancroft’s illustrations and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island flags in the Studio Room, Thursday/Friday friends had the opportunity to create, inspired by Indigenous artists and symbols.

At story time we read “Sam’s Bush Journey” Indigenous authors Sally Morgan and Ezekiel Kwaymullina and Illustrator Bronwyn Bancroft. We then discussed how we might connect with country during our upcoming holiday break! The children’s voices were recorded in our floor book, they had some wonderful ideas!

Next year we hope to build on our actions, hosting our very own CVC Preschool community NAIDOC event. Stay tuned!! 🥳
